Game Science, the Chinese game developer behind Black Myth: Wukong, has unveiled a teaser trailer for a sequel to its popular action RPG exactly one year after the original game debuted.
The first trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui was revealed today at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event in Cologne. The studio emphasized that the new project is still in early development. Zhong Kui is a legendary figure from Chinese folklore, renowned for his ability to capture and eliminate ghosts and demons.
Following the tremendous success of Black Myth: Wukong, released last August, fans anticipated that the studio would quickly begin working on a direct sequel or additional downloadable content. Unexpectedly, the announcement of Zhong Kui caught many by surprise.
While downloadable content remains a viable option, the company’s leadership has expressed a preference for developing a brand-new installment in the series. Feng Ji, the founder and CEO, shared on social media that the focus is now on creating a fresh game with new heroes, gameplay mechanics, visuals, technology, and storylines.
Feng also mentioned that the goal is to “allow for much creative freedom, experiment boldly, break away from traditional norms, and start from scratch.” He also reassured fans that Wukong’s story will return in the future, more polished and comprehensive, once everything is fully prepared.
It took seven years to develop Black Myth: Wukong, which is considered China’s first AAA game. The game sold over 20 million copies within its first month on Steam, setting a record for single-purchase games in China, and generated more than $961 million in revenue.
Industry analyst Zhang Shule explained that AAA games often require lengthy development periods, making it impractical to release sequels annually. The decision to focus on Zhong Kui allows Game Science to explore a new artistic direction while maintaining a staggered release schedule with Wukong, facilitating future updates and iterations.
