Tesla has collaborated with ByteDance’s enterprise technology division to integrate two advanced language models into the latest Model Y L sport utility vehicles in China.
The parent company of a popular short-video platform has incorporated its Doubao language model, along with another from a Chinese artificial intelligence firm, into the long-wheelbase Model Y L through the division. This update is reflected in the revised user guidelines for Tesla’s voice assistant on its Chinese website.
Doubao is responsible for handling voice command functionalities, such as navigation, media playback, air conditioning adjustments, and responding to manual queries. The other AI model from the Chinese AI company will power voice chat services driven by artificial intelligence.
This development appears to be part of Tesla’s effort to improve its in-car smart features, which have previously faced criticism. Past issues include the voice assistant’s difficulty recognizing various Chinese dialects and maintaining conversational context. Additionally, the vehicle’s system does not support popular smartphone integrations like CarPlay or Android Auto, requiring drivers to manually input destination details.
Earlier this year, the company launched an AI chatbot called Grok in the U.S., but its functionality is limited to certain vehicle models and non-driving related topics. It cannot manage tasks like navigation, climate control, or window operations.
Recent reports indicate that Grok experienced a substantial data breach, exposing as many as 370,000 chat records. This breach included user-uploaded photos, spreadsheets, and documents, all of which became accessible via search engines and publicly available online.
