On August 15, a new joint venture was formed between the operators of Shanghai’s two major airports and a state-owned construction company from nearby Nantong. The partnership aims to finance, develop, and operate a new airport project referred to as the “Third Airport” in the region’s key aviation hub.
The company, named Shanghai-Jiangsu Nantong New Airport Construction Investment, was created with a registered capital of 1 billion yuan (approximately $139.2 million). The ownership is split with the airport operator holding 51% and the Nantong Urban Construction Group owning the remaining shares, according to corporate registration data.
This new venture will specialize in civil airport operations, passenger air transportation, construction activities, aircraft maintenance, and general aviation services.
The establishment of this airport was part of a 2020 agreement between the airport operator and Nantong’s local government, aiming to bolster the integrated growth strategy of the Yangtze River Delta region. Currently, this region has seven major airports, each handling more than 10 million passengers annually, including Shanghai’s Hongqiao and Pudong International airports.
A development plan released last June indicates that the new airport will initially accommodate 40 million passengers annually, with plans to expand capacity to 80 million in the future. Situated 120 kilometers from Shanghai, it will feature two long-haul runways.
Major Chinese airlines such as China Eastern, China Southern, and Air China have all announced plans to establish bases at this new Nantong airport.
Transportation links are progressing alongside the project, with the first phase of the high-speed rail connecting Hongqiao and Nantong beginning service in 2020. The second phase, linking Pudong and Nantong, is anticipated to be completed by 2027, improving passenger flow among the three airports.
