On September 2, SAIC-GM announced a special promotion for its flagship model, offering buyers a CNY10,000 (approximately USD1,400) discount throughout this month. The full price of the Buick Envision Plus is CNY169,900 (around USD23,800). However, with the discount combined with a nationwide subsidy of CNY15,000, customers who purchase the vehicle by September 30 will pay just CNY144,900.
Since implementing a clear, fixed pricing strategy in August of last year, SAIC-GM has seen a rebound in sales of the Buick Envision, which has also helped boost sales of other models within the company’s lineup. Despite this positive trend, it remains uncertain whether this promotional discount will significantly influence consumer purchasing decisions.
In August, SAIC-GM reported sales of 44,000 vehicles, marking a 177% increase compared to the same month last year. During the first eight months of the year, the joint venture’s total sales rose by 29% to reach 330,000 units, a strong recovery beginning in May.
In addition to revising its pricing approach, SAIC-GM has increased investments in electric vehicles and advanced smart technology. In April, the company launched a premium new energy vehicle (NEV) brand called Electra, with plans to introduce five new models over the next eight months, including the upcoming Electra L7.
Historically, the Buick Envision was a leading midsize SUV among joint venture brands, with peak annual sales exceeding 300,000 units in 2017. However, with the rise of electric vehicles, the market share of JV brands has declined, leading to a sharp decrease in sales of the Buick Envision and other traditional fossil fuel models from SAIC-GM.
