More than 245,000 electric vehicles produced by a Chinese automaker are set to be recalled starting March 16, 2018, through January 16, 2023, due to potential software-related safety issues.
The recall affects approximately 246,229 models, including the ES8, ES6, and EC6. The vehicles face software glitches that can lead to the dashboard and central control screen temporarily going dark under certain conditions.
During these blackouts, drivers lose access to critical information such as speed, fault alerts, and functions like defrosting and defogging, creating safety concerns. However, most of these issues can be addressed remotely through software updates.
The company will issue a free over-the-air update to bring affected vehicles up to version Aspen 3.5.6, Alder 2.1.0, or a later release, which will fix the problem. Vehicles already receiving the update do not require any additional action.
For the few vehicles that haven’t been updated, the automaker will contact owners directly to perform the recall and resolve the issue.
As of the end of 2022, the company had delivered 289,556 vehicles, including several high-end smart models such as the ES8, ES7 (known as the EL7 in Europe), ES6, EC7, EC6, ET7, and ET5. The recall concerns only first-generation platform models of the ES8, ES6, and EC6.
