Last month, Leapmotor maintained its position as the leading Chinese electric vehicle startup for the sixth straight month in August, though it still trails behind its annual sales goal.

The company delivered 57,066 vehicles in August, reflecting a 14% increase compared to July, based on reports from several EV manufacturers. Zeekr, the premium EV division of a major automaker, came in second with 44,843 units, up 1.5% from the previous month.

The Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance, which includes brands like Aito (Seres Group), Luxeed (Chery Auto), Stelato (BAIC BluePark Energy Technology), and Maextro (JAC Motors), saw a 6.6% decline, with deliveries totaling 44,579 vehicles, placing it third.

Xpeng Motors was fourth, boosting its deliveries by 2.7% to reach 37,709 vehicles. Nio ranked fifth with 31,305 units, an impressive nearly 49% jump, overtaking Li Auto, which experienced a 7.2% drop to 28,529 vehicles, placing it seventh. Xiaomi secured the sixth spot with over 30,000 cars delivered.

Nio’s increase was largely driven by the launch of its new all-electric SUV, the Onvo L90, unveiled on July 31. In its first month, the vehicle, starting at less than CNY200,000 (around USD27,995), accounted for 10,575 units.

Most Chinese automakers are likely to face hurdles in reaching their yearly sales targets. Xpeng appears to be the most capable of hitting its goal, having delivered 271,600 vehicles from January through August—more than 71% of its annual target. To reach the goal, it must average about 33,800 units per month until year’s end.

Leapmotor, which sold 328,900 vehicles over the first eight months, is at roughly 57% of its annual target. To meet its goal, it will need to deliver approximately 62,800 cars each month for the remaining four months, exceeding its current monthly average.

Without detailed delivery data, Xiaomi’s progress is conservatively estimated at roughly half of its annual target so far. The other automakers’ figures all fall below 50% of their respective objectives.
