Jensen Huang made an unexpected visit to a wet market in Shanghai, drawing a crowd of onlookers who eagerly took photos as he shopped for various fruits, snacks, and other foods. Videos circulating online captured Huang, dressed casually without his signature leather jacket, sampling food and sharing a laugh with a fruit vendor at the main wet market in Lujiazui, the city’s central business district, on January 24. He purchased strawberries, kumquats, and other produce in large quantities ahead of attending Nvidia’s Chinese New Year celebration at its local office.
This trip marks the beginning of Huang’s first visit to China this year, during which he plans to participate in several events marking the Lunar New Year across the country, including stops in Beijing, Shenzhen, and Taiwan. He had visited China three times last year.
Many Chinese residents were thrilled to see Huang, who also serves as Nvidia’s CEO, with numerous describing the encounter as “remarkable.” Some even shared photos on social media, remarking that you could casually encounter one of the world’s wealthiest individuals in the graphics card industry just while grocery shopping in Shanghai.
Known as a dedicated fan of street food, Huang has been seen frequenting markets in various Chinese cities during past visits. In November 2024, he was observed at a dai pai dong, an open-air food stall in Hong Kong, enjoying beer with dozens of people, including prominent figures like Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po, Nancy Ip Yuk-yu, president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Harry Shum, chair of HKUST’s university council, and Neil Shen, founder of Sequoia Capital.
Top executives from major US technology companies often curate cultural experiences during their visits to China. For instance, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook frequently visits parks and art galleries as part of his trips.
