Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group, a subsidiary of the state-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation, has set a new record for the highest number of large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers delivered in a single month.
The Shanghai-based company delivered the Mihezem today, a 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carrier that it independently designed and built. This marks the third LNG carrier delivered this month by the company, with a fourth vessel scheduled for tomorrow.
So far this year, Hudong-Zhonghua has completed the delivery of eight large LNG carriers—matching the total for the entire previous year. The company’s shipment volume is projected to reach 11 vessels by year’s end.
The Mihezem is a fifth-generation LNG carrier from the Changheng series, developed entirely in-house. It is the 55th vessel constructed by the company. This particular ship can store enough LNG to serve the energy needs of Shanghai residents for approximately half a month.
The company currently has over 50 orders for LNG carriers, with more than 20 of these projects already underway.
By maintaining control over key shipbuilding technologies, the component localization rate for this type of vessel has surpassed 80 percent. This technological independence not only enhances the overall performance of the ships but also significantly reduces construction costs and turnaround times.
As a leader in the industry, the company has contributed to expanding China’s LNG shipping sector, increasing the number of domestic LNG ship suppliers to over 130 from just over 20. This growth has fostered a robust supporting market valued at tens of billions of Chinese yuan—equivalent to billions of U.S. dollars.
