The initial shipment of exhibits for the upcoming China International Import Expo recently arrived at the Shanghai port from Chancay Port in Peru. The items were offloaded from the COSCO Prince Rupert container vessel, as announced yesterday by authorities in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area. City officials are collaborating with port agencies to establish a fast-track process for clearing the customs of these expo exhibits, ensuring they arrive safely and on schedule for the event.
The shipment includes ceramics, alpaca wool products, and other artisanal crafts from South America. It was loaded at Chancay Port on September 21 and reached Shanghai in just 23 days—significantly quicker than typical shipping times from Peru. Many of these items are expected to make their first appearance at the expo, which is scheduled to take place at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai from November 5 to 10.
This journey was at least 10 days shorter than usual transit times on the China-Peru shipping route prior to the port’s operation, according to Zhou Yiwen, head of the logistics team for the expo at COSCO Shipping Lines. Opened last November with an investment of about $3.6 billion, Chancay Port has streamlined sea freight between China and Peru. Cargo ships bound for Asian ports now bypass the Panama Canal or stopovers in Mexico, reducing the shipping duration from around 35-40 days to 23 days and lowering logistics costs by over 20%.
Since its opening, Chancay Port has become a vital hub for exports of Chinese-made appliances and automobiles, driving economic growth in Peru. Additionally, Peruvian agricultural products like blueberries and avocados are increasingly reaching China and other parts of Asia via the port.
According to official data, customs authorities in Shanghai have already inspected over 240 ships traveling between Chancay Port and the city.
