The Ezhou Huahu International Airport, a specialized cargo hub in China’s Hubei province, has launched regular air freight routes to Italy and Brazil.
Italy’s Società Aerea Mediterranea became the 20th international cargo airline to operate at the airport, with one of its Boeing 777 aircraft landing in the city yesterday after departing from Brescia.
The route between Ezhou and Brescia will operate four flights weekly, transporting Chinese cross-border e-commerce goods and industrial products to Italy. In the opposite direction, high-value items such as luxury fashion goods, personal care products, beauty products, advanced mechanical components, automotive parts, and precision instruments will be shipped back to China.
Additionally, Ethiopian Airlines began service from Ezhou to São Paulo on March 31, marking the start of another international route between China and South America, following the existing connection to Santiago, Chile. The Ezhou-São Paulo service will run three times a week, primarily importing fresh goods like salmon and fruits from South America to China.
These new routes have strengthened logistics links between Central China, Western Europe, and South America. They are expected to bolster cross-border e-commerce operations, support high-end manufacturing supply chains, and enable quicker access for European luxury consumer goods and precision industrial products into China.
Established by Chinese logistics giant SF Holding, Huahu Airport started operations in 2022, making it Asia’s first dedicated cargo airport. Last year, its cargo and mail throughput grew by 44%, reaching 1.5 million tons.
So far this year, the airport has added six international cargo routes, including connections to Athens, Riyadh, Malabo, and Brussels, alongside Brescia and São Paulo. Additionally, the frequency of international flights to Los Angeles, East Midlands, and Chicago has increased.
