The upcoming Formula One Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai is anticipated to set a new attendance record this weekend, boosting tourism and local spending in the surrounding areas, according to event organizers.

Scheduled from March 13 to 15, the race is projected to draw around 230,000 spectators, exceeding last year’s turnout of 220,000. Of these, approximately 14% are expected to be international visitors, marking a 3 percentage point increase from 2025, as reported by Zhang Weiyao, deputy general manager of the event’s organizing group.

This year’s F1 season features significant rule changes, including modifications to car dimensions and weight, alongside a shift to engines powered halfway by electricity. These adjustments are anticipated to introduce more variability and unpredictability into the races.

Additionally, the sport is experiencing its first team expansion in recent years, with American company Cadillac joining as the 11th team. The addition of Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu as a reserve has also heightened local interest, Zhang mentioned.

Accommodation near the Shanghai International Circuit, located in Jiading district, has seen a tenfold increase in bookings for hotels within a 10 to 15-kilometer radius compared to the previous weekend. Flight reservations during the race weekend have also grown significantly, with data from Trip.Com indicating double-digit percentage increases year-over-year.

Most travelers planning to attend the race, nearly 90%, express intentions to explore cultural experiences beyond the event itself, according to Trip.Com.

The circuit is nestled in Jiading, which will host a 54-day Automotive Culture Festival starting on March 13. The festival will feature discounts on local attractions, hotels, and restaurants, along with over 100 auto-related activities. Visitors will have opportunities to deepen their understanding of both F1 and the local culture, said Jin Fen, deputy director of Jiading’s culture and tourism bureau.

Last year’s F1 Chinese Grand Prix generated a direct economic impact of approximately $364 million and an indirect impact of around $6.9 billion, representing a 75% increase from the previous year, based on data from the Shanghai Sports Administration.
