China’s summer movie ticket sales have already exceeded 10 billion yuan (approximately $1.4 billion), and the season isn’t finished yet. Industry experts believe this summer’s total could surpass last year’s, setting the stage for annual sales to reach the goal of 50 billion yuan.
As of yesterday afternoon, nearly 267 million people had gone to the movies this summer, according to an online ticketing platform. There’ve been about 32.9 million screenings, with average ticket prices around 37.30 yuan (about $5.20). The top-grossing film so far this season is the classic movie “Dead to Rights.”
This summer’s film lineup has been unusually diverse, featuring 153 titles across various genres. Audiences have enjoyed everything from historical dramas and animated films to comedies, period pieces, action movies, sports dramas, thrillers, war epics, and crime stories.
The box office has been gaining strength, according to data analyst Chen Jin. In July, ticket sales increased steadily over three consecutive weeks compared to the previous month, and daily revenue exceeded 100 million yuan ($14 million) for 31 consecutive days. With 10 days left in the season, total earnings are on pace to beat last year’s figures early, putting the annual target of 50 billion yuan within reach.
Sales in major first-tier cities are rebounding, especially in eastern China, Chen noted. The film “Dead to Rights” has also been popular in smaller third- and fourth-tier cities, while comedies like “The Stage” and “The Lychee Road” have performed particularly well in northern regions of the country.
Although the summer season isn’t over, it’s already approaching the total revenue of last year’s summer, according to Lai Li, an analyst at a ticketing platform. With more than 10 new movies still set to premiere, including “Final Destination: Bloodlines” and “Eden,” these releases are expected to give the box office one last boost and sustain the momentum.
