(Digital Phablet) July 24 — Currently, no self-driving features are available in the Chinese vehicles on the market. Drivers are told they will be responsible for any incidents while their cars are operating in smart driving mode, according to the Ministry of Public Security.
Officials from the Ministry emphasized at a recent press conference that smart driving systems are merely assistive tools. The driver remains the ultimate person accountable for vehicle operation and safety.
Leaving the steering wheel or taking your eyes off the road while the vehicle’s smart driving mode is active can pose significant safety hazards. Such actions could lead to civil liabilities, administrative penalties, or even criminal charges, the ministry warned.
Most of the current market offerings feature Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems, as fully autonomous, Level 3 systems have not yet been introduced into production models.
Experts believe the industry is at a pivotal point — as smart driving technology moves toward higher levels of autonomy, vague feature descriptions or unclear task divisions could create safety concerns.
An industry insider noted that, despite rapid advancements, these systems are not perfect. Some drivers have become overly reliant on them, sometimes due to exaggerated marketing claims from automakers.
In response, the Ministry announced plans to collaborate with other government agencies to tighten regulations. Automakers will be required to more clearly define their driver assistance functions, disclose limitations, specify potential risks, and refrain from overpromoting these systems.
Additionally, authorities will update China’s road traffic laws to specify the responsibilities and liabilities associated with smart driving systems and drivers alike. New safety technology standards will be developed and incorporated into driver’s license assessments.
The Ministry also committed to enhancing public awareness efforts, educating drivers about the technical boundaries of driver assistance features and their personal responsibilities behind the wheel.
