The operational division of ByteDance’s Doubao has partnered with the Museum of Art Pudong in Shanghai to introduce an artificial intelligence assistant as a guide for two prominent international exhibitions. This AI guide will offer visitors comprehensive insights into the displayed works.
The collaboration was formalized yesterday, designating Doubao as the official AI guide for the museum’s current exhibitions, “The Wonder of Patterns: Masterpieces from India, Iran, and the Ottoman World from the Louvre” and “Picasso Through the Eyes of Paul Smith.” These exhibitions, which opened last month, are scheduled to run through early May.
Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with Doubao by asking for expert explanations on various aspects of the artworks, such as artistic style, historical context, innovative techniques, and cultural importance.
According to Zhu Jun, Vice President of ByteDance, the interaction with the AI is intended to resemble a conversational experience. Doubao is designed to stimulate visitors’ existing knowledge and emotions through empathetic questions and exploratory dialogues, enriching their understanding of the exhibits.
A major challenge for AI guides in exhibitions is maintaining accurate interpretations. This involves sophisticated recognition of culturally similar artifacts, understanding lesser-known items without extensive reference materials, and consistently identifying the same artwork from different viewing angles, explained a project lead involved with Doubao’s museum tour feature.
