Anhui Surpasses Guangdong to Lead China’s Auto Production in 2023

Anhui has overtaken Guangdong as China’s leading provincial region for automobile production in the first three quarters of this year, ending nine years of Guangdong’s dominance. During this period, Anhui produced just over 2.4 million vehicles, reflecting a 32 percent increase compared to the previous year. In contrast, Guangdong saw a decline of 45 percent, with its total dropping to approximately 2.08 million units, based on recent statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics.

The province also topped the country in new energy vehicle manufacturing during the same period, nearing 1.22 million units. Guangdong produced about 730,200 electric vehicles, experiencing a 68 percent decrease from the previous year. This noticeable shift is partly due to a revised method of calculation that now measures production based on where the vehicles are manufactured, rather than where the companies are headquartered. It is expected that Anhui will remain at the top over Guangdong for the rest of the year, establishing itself as the premier auto-producing region in China.

Anhui is home to seven major automakers, including industry giants like BYD, Nio, Chery Automobile, and Volkswagen Anhui. The region also hosts roughly 2,800 supply chain companies engaged in manufacturing vehicle parts, batteries, electric motors, and intelligent driving systems.

Following Anhui and Guangdong, eleven other Chinese regions each produced over one million vehicles in the first three quarters. These areas include Chongqing, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shaanxi, Shanghai, Hunan, Jilin, Beijing, Henan, and Hubei. Additionally, Sichuan and Guangxi each manufactured more than 800,000 units.

This year, a total of 15 provinces are projected to produce over one million vehicles, up from 10 in 2022, 11 in 2023, and 12 in 2024.

In the previous year, the top ten regions for auto production were Guangdong, Anhui, Chongqing, Jiangsu, Shandong, Shanghai, Shaanxi, Zhejiang, Jilin, and Hubei. The leading three regions produced 5.71 million, 2.62 million, and 2.54 million units, respectively.
