Air China has placed an order for 60 A320neo aircraft from Airbus, valued at approximately USD 9.5 billion. This marks the second major purchase from the European aircraft manufacturer within two days in its largest market.

The airline announced in a stock exchange filing yesterday that Airbus will provide substantial discounts on the A320neo’s list price, meaning the actual purchase price will likely be below USD 9.5 billion. The planes are scheduled for delivery in multiple batches from 2028 to 2032.

The day prior, Juneyao Airlines and Spring Airlines revealed plans to acquire 25 and 30 Airbus A320 and A320neo planes, respectively. They estimated the value of these orders at USD 4.1 billion each based on catalog prices, although final costs will be negotiated and are expected to be lower than the listed prices.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Airbus’ presence in China. Since entering the market, the company’s market share has increased from roughly 20% in 2008 to over 50%, according to Xu Gang, Executive Vice President and China CEO, at a delivery event for the 800th A320 assembled in Tianjin on December 17.

The Airbus A320 family ranks among the most widely used single-aisle passenger aircraft globally, with approximately 11,300 in operation worldwide. Over 2,000 of these aircraft operate within China, making up nearly half of the country’s civil aviation fleet. The A320neo represents a next-generation upgrade of the original A320 model.

Shares of Air China declined by 0.3% to CNY 9.04 (USD 1.34) as of 10:05 a.m. in Shanghai today.
