Over 100 Chinese exhibitors attending the ongoing MEDICA Trade Fair in Germany have reportedly fallen ill due to food poisoning, according to reports from a major news agency. An initial investigation suggests that the cause may be linked to food safety issues with boxed meals supplied by a local Chinese restaurant. The incident has resulted in at least four individuals being hospitalized, though no serious injuries or fatalities have been reported.
The consulate in Dusseldorf estimates that more than 100 people might have been affected, although officials are still confirming the exact number. Those hospitalized are currently in stable condition. The authorities are engaging with the restaurant believed to be responsible and have established a task force to investigate the matter further.
The affected guests received boxed meals that cost approximately €20 each (around $23). Some individuals experienced severe symptoms, including needing to visit the restroom over 40 times in a single night. An exhibitor shared that a representative from their booth spent much of the following day in the bathroom, which impacted communication with visitors. Reports from social media indicate that this incident caused significant discomfort for many attendees.
The restaurant involved, called Brothers’ Barbecue, issued an apology on social media, admitting to serious mistakes during meal preparation, including improper thawing and cooking of meat. They acknowledged that these errors resulted in many customers experiencing adverse symptoms after eating. The establishment has responded by distributing medication and assisting severely affected individuals in seeking medical treatment.
However, some victims remain dissatisfied, criticizing the restaurant for minimizing the severity of the incident and not providing clear explanations regarding the actual cause of the food poisoning. Several attendees reported that the meat in their meals had a sour taste or an off smell, raising suspicion that the issues might not be solely related to thawing errors.
