On May 12, Weibo’s administrators announced steps to cultivate a more civilized, harmonious, and healthy online environment while maintaining efficient content distribution on the platform. This initiative comes in response to the Central Cyberspace Administration of China’s “Clear and Bright” campaign aimed at combating the misuse of AI technology.
The “Clear and Bright” campaign began in 2016 and focuses annually on different areas of concern. Previous efforts concentrated on improving the online environments for minors and addressing issues such as online rumors. This year, the campaign shifts its attention to tackling the abuse of AI technology.
In a detailed update, Weibo reported a comprehensive crackdown on various violations linked to AI-generated content, including the creation of sensationalistic videos and unauthorized online training courses. The platform has removed over 560 pieces of non-compliant content and issued temporary bans on 11 accounts, including those under the handles @斜杠阿途 and @一起搞点小钱钱.
Additionally, Weibo has reinforced its policies by strictly prohibiting the transfer, sale, or rental of online accounts as stated in its Community Guidelines. Enhanced monitoring efforts have led to the deletion of 53 more instances of non-compliant AI content, resulting in the closure of accounts such as @rope换脸 and @L_KOUKUN.
Moving forward, Weibo plans to intensify its efforts against all violations related to AI-generated content. The platform aims to continuously upgrade governance rules to enhance AI monitoring capabilities. Users are encouraged to create AI content in compliance with platform rules and to clearly label any AI-generated material. This initiative is part of Weibo’s commitment to fostering a safe and orderly growth for AI technology while ensuring a transparent online space for all users.
