ChatGPT is about to undergo a significant upgrade intended to streamline your daily tasks and eliminate the tedious background chores that often distract us from work and leisure. The new ChatGPT Agent will introduce fully automated browsing capabilities, and it’s on its way to you shortly.
OpenAI Enhances ChatGPT’s Functionality
ChatGPT is set to incorporate fully automated AI agents, referred to as ChatGPT Agent. Previously, while ChatGPT could search the web for information, users still had to actively steer its findings.
Now, with the ChatGPT Agent, these processes can be fully automated with minimal user involvement. This new tool combines two of OpenAI’s earlier offerings—Operator and Deep Research—creating a significantly more robust solution that can autonomously handle various tasks. While Operator previously allowed web browsing and basic task completion, Deep Research was tailored for in-depth information analysis but lacked interactive web capabilities.
The integration of these capabilities enables ChatGPT Agent to not just browse but also retrieve tailored information based on your inputs. You can link various apps and accounts to ChatGPT, transforming it into a personal assistant that understands your specific needs, whether that’s through Gmail, your calendar, or other apps.
This advancement can be categorized into three main functions:
- Autonomous Tasks: The ChatGPT Agent can perform complex, multi-step tasks without the need for constant user interaction.
- Web Browsing: The agent can emulate real human behavior while navigating the web within ChatGPT. It can interact with forms efficiently, essential for today’s internet usage. Essentially, it acts as a virtual computer featuring both a text-based and a visual browser interface.
- Tools: OpenAI has confirmed that the ChatGPT Agent can leverage all existing tools to fulfill its tasks, including access to APIs, file handling, importing data, reasoning, and even coding when necessary. For instance, the Agent has access to its own terminal for specific tasks or can use generative AI for image creation.
This is the first model from OpenAI that can seamlessly switch between different functions using a “unified toolbox.” With reinforcement learning, the Agent can determine when to deploy its diverse array of tools, helping it tackle prompts and complex tasks step by step. Over time, it’s expected to become increasingly efficient, enhancing both speed and accuracy in task completion.
Will ChatGPT Agent Operate Independently? Is It Safe?
OpenAI’s recent livestream showcased several key security measures integrated within the ChatGPT Agent.
While the Agent can handle tasks autonomously, it will still ask for user confirmation when it comes to critical actions like submitting forms or logging into websites. These pauses are to prevent potential issues in sensitive scenarios. Although automation is impressive, user input remains vital for now.
OpenAI has trained the Agent to reject any dangerous, ambiguous, or harmful requests that it cannot fulfill, aligning with the existing safety standards. This might frustrate some users who feel that ChatGPT is overly restricted, but precautions are prudent when deploying autonomous AI agents.
Additionally, it won’t make any purchases without your explicit confirmation.
To counter prompt injection attacks—an emerging concern for AI tools—several new protective measures have been implemented. The ChatGPT Agent operates in a secure sandboxed environment to minimize any risks when interacting with your system. It also employs classifiers specifically designed to identify and shut down manipulation attempts.
When Will ChatGPT Agent Be Available?
In a rare announcement, Sam Altman confirmed that the Agent is rolling out immediately. ChatGPT Pro users will have access to 400 queries each month, while Plus and Team subscribers will have a more limited quota of 40 requests.
However, like most new features from ChatGPT, even with immediate launch, the rollout may take a few days for individual accounts, even if subscribed to one of the mentioned tiers.
Keep in mind, the in-browser agentic browsing landscape is rapidly evolving. Earlier in 2025, Opera unveiled its innovative Neon browser, while Perplexity is testing out its AI-enhanced Comet browser. Not to mention Norton is planning to launch Neo, another AI-powered browser, later in 2025. Clearly, AI-powered browsers are on the rise and set to become a staple!
