Alibaba’s Tmall announced that the highly anticipated 2025 Double 11 shopping festival is set to kick off at 8 p.m. on October 20. This year, the event is poised to mark a significant milestone for the platform, as it will serve as the launchpad for the widespread deployment of new AI technologies across various aspects of the shopping experience.
During today’s press conference, Alibaba’s Taobao division emphasized that this year’s Double 11 will be a showcase for their comprehensive AI integration. The company revealed that these advancements will impact flow distribution, enhance consumer experiences, and support merchants’ operations in innovative ways.
Kef, Chief AI Officer of Alibaba’s China e-commerce group, explained that the platform is committed to applying “useful AI” standards to address consumer pain points and drive merchant growth. By leveraging AI to understand and organize a vast database of over 2 billion products, Taobao has achieved notable efficiency gains. These include a 20% improvement in matching traffic relevance, a 10% boost in click-through rates for recommendation feeds, and a 12% increase in advertising return on investment.
In addition to these backend improvements, Taobao is rolling out six new AI-driven shopping assistant applications for consumers. These include “AI Universal Search,” capable of understanding complex queries, and “AI Help Me Choose,” which filters products through conversational interactions. Upgrading to multimodal search, “Pai Li Tao” allows users to combine images and text. Other features include automated category list generation, real-time Q&A functions, virtual fitting rooms using AI, and personalized shopping lists powered by AI.
On the merchant side, Alibaba has integrated AI tools to streamline operations. The platform reports that their AI graphic design tools now produce approximately 200 million images and 5 million videos monthly, increasing product click rates by 10%. They also note that AI-powered data analysis has generated over 10 million reports, while their AI customer service, “Dian Xiao Mi 5.0,” helps merchants cut costs by an average of 20 million yuan daily.
Alibaba states that it has established a comprehensive AIGC (Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content), data, recommendation, and creative technology system that spans all e-commerce scenarios. With AI fully integrated into this year’s Double 11 event, the platform aims to accelerate the digital transformation of e-commerce operations and consumer engagement, ushering in a new era of smarter shopping.
