Microsoft is reportedly ramping up server capacity in preparation for the upcoming releases of OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 models. According to insiders familiar with the company’s plans, as mentioned by The Verge, Microsoft engineers are actively working on the infrastructure needed to support these advanced AI systems.
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has recently confirmed that the GPT-4.5 model is expected to launch within the next few weeks. Reports suggest that Microsoft may be ready to host the new AI model as soon as next week. GPT-4.5, codenamed Orion, represents the next step in OpenAI’s line of models and is set to be the final non-chain-of-thought model. OpenAI has hinted that GPT-4.5 could be significantly more powerful than its predecessor, GPT-4, and the forthcoming GPT-5 is anticipated to introduce even more substantial advancements.
Furthermore, sources indicate that Microsoft plans to launch GPT-5 by the end of May, aligning with Altman’s promise that the next generation of models would be released within a few months. Although OpenAI introduced the o3-mini last month, it appears the company will no longer release the o3 reasoning model separately; instead, it will be integrated into GPT-5. This approach aligns with OpenAI’s broader goal of merging its large language models to eventually develop a more robust model that could be labeled as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
The updated GPT-5 is expected to unify OpenAI’s o series and GPT series models, streamlining their functionalities. This launch timing could prove beneficial, as it coincides with Microsoft’s Build 2025 developer conference, which kicks off on May 19.
