A recent report by Business Insider highlights exciting advancements in humanoid robotics, as Brett Adcock, founder of the robotics company Figure AI, discussed on his podcast “Around the Prompt.” He claims that we are just a few years away from humanoid robots being capable of performing “useful work.”
According to Adcock, the key to this progress lies in hardware advancements. Over the past decade, improvements in hardware reliability have been significant. “If the hardware isn’t up to par, achieving this goal is impossible,” he stated. In addition to hardware, the evolution of neural networks that mimic brain structures has also played a crucial role in bringing humanoid robots closer to reality.
Last week, Figure AI unveiled an updated version of their humanoid robot, Helix, capable of completing an hour of uninterrupted logistics tasks, such as processing parcels on a conveyor belt. Adcock noted that this development demonstrates that their neural networks are “approaching human speed and performance.”
Founded in 2022, Figure has raised $2.34 billion, with $1.5 billion coming from a Series C funding round earlier this year. Current estimates value the company at $2.6 billion.
Currently, Figure’s robots are interacting with office employees, asking if they need water or coffee, or simply patrolling the premises. Adcock envisions a future where humanoid robots are as common as humans, saying, “It will truly feel like a science fiction movie.”
