The Unique Quality of Real Art and Photos

Genuine photographs and handmade artwork possess a depth and authenticity that AI-generated pieces struggle to replicate. While some AI creations may seem convincingly real at first glance, a closer examination usually uncovers minor flaws. Once you learn to recognize these discrepancies, the illusion breaks down swiftly.

11. Unrealistic Eyes

If you’ve ever encountered a portrait that felt off, it’s often due to the eyes. Although AI can create striking images, it often fails to capture the nuanced emotions in human eyes, leading to stares that feel vacant or disturbing. You might notice misaligned pupils, one iris appearing larger than the other, or an absence of the natural depth that breathes life into a human face. Instead, what you often see are lifeless expressions that lack substance, creating an emotional disconnect that can make you uneasy without knowing why.

10. Distorted Logos and Branding

AI-generated images frequently misrepresent branding. You might come across a distorted Nike logo or symbols that resemble brands but don’t actually exist. These mistakes highlight the model’s failure to grasp contextual details, which become apparent if you’re familiar with the brand being imitated. Small aspects like font style, spacing, and shapes are often where the errors manifest. Interestingly, in my experiments, I’ve noticed that many AI image generators seem to frequently incorporate the Coca-Cola logo or variations of it into scenes, suggesting that users have requested it enough for the models to prioritize its creation.

9. Impossible Reflections

Mirrors, body of water, and glass can easily highlight the shortcomings of AI imagery. Sometimes, reflections are entirely absent, or they include mismatched or distorted elements that contradict the main image. In extreme cases, reflections may feature extra limbs or objects that aren’t in the actual scene, creating a bizarre effect. These AI-generated reflections can remind one of surreal scenes from early 2000s horror films, as they often don’t abide by the laws of physics or light.

8. Incoherent Architecture

While AI can mimic various architectural styles, it struggles with structural accuracy. In AI-generated images, buildings often display design elements that defy logic. Staircases may lead directly into walls, floating doorways might be inaccessible, and windows can appear oddly spaced as if they were incorrectly copied from other structures. The model doesn’t have a true understanding of engineering principles, resulting in buildings that seem okay at first, but crumble under scrutiny.

7. Incongruent Backgrounds

Initial impressions of an image may seem convincing until you notice something odd in the background. Imagine a tree sprouting from a rooftop or people hovering slightly above the ground. Figures can get half-merged into other elements, like buildings or fences, creating visual glitches. Sometimes scales feel off—like a cat the size of a mailbox or a streetlamp barely reaching your eye level. Even the most advanced AI art generators often fail to deliver coherent, logical backgrounds, giving the scene a forced or disjointed appearance.

6. Blurry or Distorted Background Figures

Similar to the previous point, background figures in AI images usually receive less attention, making them appear blurry, unfinished, or contorted. These ghostly figures may have indistinct facial features, and their body postures often confuse the viewer. Commonly, you might see repeated faces or mirrored hairstyles in group scenes, revealing the artificiality behind the image. Despite a sharp foreground, these anomalies clearly indicate that the image isn’t organically produced.

Note: The following indicators pertain mainly to older AI image generators, as newer models have made substantial improvements.

5. Overly Smooth or Plastic Skin

AI-generated characters frequently exhibit skin that looks unnaturally perfected, resembling an airbrushed appearance. This issue arises from how AI represents facial textures, favoring overly smooth results. Pores, freckles, and scars often get erased, leading to an unearthly, waxy appearance. This smoothing can extend beyond the face to other areas like the neck and hands, contributing to an artificial look. Some advanced AI models, such as GPT-4o, have begun to produce remarkably realistic images that avoid this overly smooth effect.

4. Anatomically Incorrect Hands

This is one of the clearest giveaways of AI imagery. While improvements have been made, AI still struggles with hands. Distorted fingers—extra digits, fused joints, or hands positioned at awkward angles—are all telltale signs of artificial generation. Thumbs in particular can reveal issues, often appearing unnatural or disproportionate to the rest of the body.

3. Scrambled Text or Garbled Letters

AI creations consistently falter when it comes to producing text. Whether it’s a street sign or a product label, you’re likely to see jumbled letters or text that resembles a confusing word puzzle. AI models focus on visual data rather than linguistic comprehension, resulting in letter-like shapes that fail to form coherent words. While a few advanced models can produce readable text, they still may feature minor errors. There are tools available for correcting gibberish text in AI images, but their effectiveness can vary.

2. Erratic Light Sources

Lighting discrepancies present another frequent red flag. You may notice shadows that clash in direction or subjects illuminated in a way that contradicts where their shadows fall. Though most people aren’t lighting experts, we instinctively know how light should behave, and when AI ignores these rules, it becomes evident—even on a subconscious level.
