A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck southern China’s Guangxi region early Monday, resulting in two fatalities and the collapse of 13 buildings, according to state media reports. The tremor occurred in Liuzhou city at 12:21 a.m. local time (4:21 p.m. ET), and as of this morning, one individual remained unaccounted for.

Authorities identified the victims as a 63-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman, with search and rescue operations still underway for the missing person. Over 7,000 residents have been evacuated from the affected area.

Footage shared by local broadcasters shows civilians fleeing high-rise structures and scenes of destruction, including debris strewn across neighborhoods. Rescue workers equipped with helmets and tools are seen navigating the wreckage, while search dogs attempt to detect signs of life beneath the rubble.

Earthquakes are a relatively frequent occurrence in China. Last January, a powerful quake in Tibet claimed at least 126 lives and caused widespread damage to infrastructure.
