We were curious to know your thoughts on the trend of flat-edged smartphones. The feedback is quite clear: a significant majority of you are fans.
Flat edges on smartphones may not be a groundbreaking concept, but they’ve gained significant popularity recently. This trend is evident in the latest releases from Google, including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL, all of which showcase this design as a noticeable upgrade from their predecessors.
Prior to these models, other relatively recent smartphones from brands like Samsung, Nothing, and of course, Apple—who is often credited with reigniting this trend—have also adopted this style. However, there are mixed feelings even among the team here at Frandroid regarding this design choice.
A More Modern Look
There’s no denying that flat edges impart a more modern aesthetic to a phone. Yet, sometimes the sharp corners can be uncomfortable, or the device may feel overly thick in one’s hand—factors that can detract from ergonomic comfort. On the flip side, some users argue that these flat edges provide improved grip and enhance overall comfort.
A Trend Enjoyed by Many
In light of this trend, we turned to you for your opinions. Do you appreciate the new flat-edge design being applied to smartphones?
According to our recent poll, 61.9% of respondents replied, “Yes, I love it.” This suggests that the trend is likely to stick around since it appears to resonate with many users.
In addition to this majority, 19.3% of participants noted they liked the appearance of flat-edged designs, though they weren’t entirely comfortable with them in hand.
This leaves less than a quarter of respondents expressing a more negative view. Specifically, 14.9% do not like this design style at all, while 3.9% acknowledge some comfort but do not favor the look.
