Yellowstone first premiered in 2018, and unless there’s an unexpected announcement for a season 6, the series will conclude in just a few days. The latest episode explored the aftermath of Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton, while the series finale will determine the fate of the remaining Dutton family and the future of the Yellowstone ranch. According to executive producer Christina Voros, the ending of the series feels both necessary and inevitable.
“I was taken aback and didn’t foresee it,” Voros shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “The conclusion of a great narrative is often both surprising and expected; it’s only in retrospect that you realize it was always meant to happen. Looking back, everything aligns perfectly. But when you’re looking ahead, it can be completely unexpected. That’s where the magic in storytelling lies, and I think [series creator] Taylor [Sheridan] has nailed that with the finale. When I read the script, I was genuinely breathless. I’ve been immersed in this universe since season 1; I know the characters very well and am deeply familiar with the story, and I found myself scolding myself for not anticipating it. Yet, I genuinely didn’t see it coming.”
Voros also discussed how Luke Grimes’ character, Kayce Dutton, has taken center stage during the latter half of season 5. In the second-to-last episode, Kayce suggested that saving the ranch might mean needing to “let it go.” While Voros refrained from elaborating on Kayce’s statement, she lauded Grimes’ portrayal.
“This season has showcased him magnificently,” Voros said. “What Taylor wrote for him was exceptional, but I believe Kayce has always been a quiet hero overshadowed by his father. This season, with the absence of the patriarch, the other characters needed to rise to the occasion. Without Kevin [Costner], the rest of the cast had a significant role to undertake, and they excelled, especially Luke. He carried a substantial weight this season and successfully managed the story and legacy in a beautiful way. His performance has been profound and graceful — it’s been truly remarkable to witness. I’m thrilled that viewers are connecting with his character’s journey this season, because I am as well.”
The series finale of Yellowstone is set to air this Sunday, December 15, on Paramount Network.
