The Weeknd’s universe is set to face turmoil in the new trailer for Hurry Up Tomorrow, an upcoming psychological thriller from Lionsgate.
In this film, The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, takes on a character inspired by himself—a musician grappling with severe insomnia. As he teeters on the brink of a mental breakdown, Tesfaye encounters a mysterious woman portrayed by Jenna Ortega. This chance meeting leads him on a journey that “unravels the very core of his existence,” according to Lionsgate’s synopsis.
“I realize this is all very intense, but I’m not here to hurt you,” Ortega’s character reassures Tesfaye while he lies restrained on a bed. “I genuinely apologize for this. I truly do.”
Joining them is Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan in a supporting role.

Trey Edward Shults directs Hurry Up Tomorrow from a screenplay he co-wrote with Tesfaye and Reza Fahim. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Shults described the film as the story of an artist “on the verge of a mental breakdown.” This project represents the fourth feature film for Shults, following Waves (2019), It Comes at Night (2017), and Krisha (2015).

Hurry Up Tomorrow draws inspiration from The Weeknd’s album of the same name, which was released on January 31, 2025. Promoted as the final album under the Weeknd name, this record completes a trilogy that includes 2020’s After Hours and 2022’s Dawn FM. It is anticipated that Hurry Up Tomorrow will achieve over 350,000 in first-week sales, marking it as Tesfaye’s fifth album to debut at number one.
This film also marks Tesfaye’s return to acting after his role in HBO’s The Idol in 2023, which focused on a pop star (Lily-Rose Depp) and her complicated dynamic with a cult leader (Tesfaye).
Hurry Up Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on May 16, 2025.
