In the year 2025, Sonos is set to unveil the Era 100 Pro, an iteration of its existing Era 100 tailored for the professional installation sector. This new model bears a striking resemblance to the original Era 100; however, it features a key upgrade: a built-in Power over Ethernet (PoE) port, enabling the Era 100 Pro to operate without being plugged into a traditional power supply, marking it as Sonos’ first stationary speaker designed without a need for a power outlet.

While the Era 100 Pro remains a wireless speaker equipped with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, its PoE capability allows for a more flexible installation, giving installers the option to treat it as a wired solution that simplifies setup and avoids potential wireless connectivity issues.

Despite the innovation, some friction points remain for users. Recently, many Sonos enthusiasts have found that the revamped Sonos app hinders their experience, creating challenges with stability and functionality. The adoption of Ethernet can mitigate certain wireless connectivity problems that have plagued users.

Details about the price and specific release date for the Era 100 Pro remain under wraps, although Sonos has indicated that it will be exclusively available through certified professional installers. This new speaker made its debut at the recent CEDIA 2024 trade show, which caters to the residential installation community from September 5-7.

As Sonos introduces its first PoE speaker, it’s important to note that while this feature may be new for Sonos, the concept of powered speakers is established in the industry. Competitors like Bluesound have successfully integrated multiple PoE speaker options within their Bluesound Professional line.

Although it may seem convenient to connect the Era 100 Pro directly to a standard home router or modem, PoE devices require specialized Ethernet routers or switches that supply both data and electrical power. The Era 100 Pro particularly benefits from being connected to a PoE+ network switch, capable of delivering additional power beyond standard PoE capabilities.

To enhance the installation process, Sonos has also introduced a dedicated mounting bracket for the Era 100 Pro, allowing for 30 degrees of tilt and 360 degrees of rotation. This adjustable mount features a ball joint for consistent angling, ensuring a uniform setup without the worry of deterioration over time. A locking base plate adds a layer of security against theft, and the mount can also be adapted for existing Era 100 speakers with a slight modification.

The Era 100 Pro also includes an optional eyebolt for added safety; installers may run a safety cable through this feature to meet necessary building regulations. Sonos assures that this will enhance the speaker’s ability to endure sudden shocks, ensuring its reliability in various scenarios.

Upon its release, the Era 100 Pro will introduce a new software feature named Zones. This function will enhance the customization and control of multiple speakers, allowing users to link speakers into a cohesive system that is particularly useful for expansive environments with several devices in operation.

Additionally, the Era 100 Pro will be compatible with Sonos Pro, the company’s platform that facilitates centralized management of multi-location Sonos systems.

Fully equipped with all the core Sonos functionalities, the Era 100 Pro can be utilized in stereo pairings, theatre surround setups, and will incorporate built-in microphones for smart speaker capabilities along with Sonos’ Auto-TruePlay room optimization feature.
