The beloved and critically acclaimed game, Okami, is finally receiving a sequel, although details are still limited. Fans have yearned for a continuation of this vibrant adventure for years, and it seems the stage is set for this to happen. In September 2023, Platinum Games revealed that Hideki Kamiya would be departing from the studio. Shortly after, Kamiya took to X to assure followers that he would “continue to create in my unique Hideki Kamiya style.”
It appears that promise is coming to fruition. One of the standout announcements at The Game Awards 2024 revealed that Kamiya is returning with Clover Studios to work on Okami. Although gameplay footage for the untitled sequel has yet to be unveiled, fans were treated to a cinematic teaser featuring the iconic calligraphy brush.
The trailer kicks off with Amaterasu racing through a shadowy forest and emerging into an expansive field. As dawn breaks over the mountains, flames illuminate her back, and vibrant colors start to fill the environment once more.
The original Okami launched in 2006, followed by a spiritual successor for the Nintendo DS in 2010. Since then, the series has mostly been dormant, making only sporadic appearances in crossover events, such as a Monster Hunter Rise collaboration in 2021, along with a few remasters along the way, but no new titles have debuted.

Kamiya is at the helm of the game’s direction. However, specific details about the project, such as a potential release date, remain elusive, leaving fans to hold out hope for announcements in the near future.
In the past, Capcom has dropped subtle hints regarding this series, notably conducting polls to gauge which franchises fans wanted to see revived most. Kamiya has consistently expressed his commitment to the Okami intellectual property, and it’s clear that he now has an opportunity to reintroduce the stunning gameplay of Okami to a fresh audience.
