Nvidia, the renowned component manufacturer, appears to be struggling with the supply of its GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs for laptops, originally anticipated for a January release.
Recent reports suggest that the company’s intense focus on developing AI chips has inadvertently led to a slowdown in other areas of its operations. Consequently, this has resulted in delays in the distribution of the GeForce RTX 50 series chips to its partners in the computing industry.
According to Wccftech, the launch of these graphics chips has now been postponed to March. Other upcoming Nvidia GPUs, including the RTX 70 and RTX 60 series, are expected to be announced in April.
The cause of the delay is partly attributed to miscommunication between Nvidia and its board partners regarding the specifications of the RTX 50 series SKUs. Additionally, there have been undisclosed challenges related to the laptop segment. Digi Times reports that the delay has also pushed back the launch of several other Nvidia components, including the high-end RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs, which were also scheduled for January but have been delayed due to limited availability.
Typically, delays in component release are uncommon for Nvidia, which has historically been viewed as a “model student” in the supply chain sector. According to observations from Digi Times, this unprecedented slowdown may stem from Nvidia’s all-out push for AI servers. Despite having different designs and processes for server and PC chips, the allocation of company resources could impact the debugging efficiency of new products.
While the company works to resolve its internal supply challenges, Nvidia has announced that gaming laptops equipped with the RTX 50 GPU will be available for pre-order starting February 25, with shipping set to commence in March. It’s worth noting that these laptops won’t offer customization options for the RTX 60 and RTX 70 GPUs, as those components will not be released until April.
Wccftech also highlighted that although vendors and retailers are starting to showcase laptops featuring the RTX 50 series, they’re doing so in collaboration with other partners like Intel and AMD. These laptops will incorporate components such as the Intel Core Ultra 200HX and AMD’s Fire Range and Strix Point.
