Niagara Launcher, a favorite among Android users available on the Google Play Store, has rolled out a major update that introduces a highly sought-after backup feature. The announcement of Niagara’s “Winter Update” was shared via X.
This new backup functionality enables users to store their launcher settings for easy recovery in the future. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who are switching devices, resetting their phones, or trying out various configurations. It seamlessly works with Android’s native backup system, storing your settings directly in Google Drive. The backup encompasses user favorites, swipe actions for apps, blacklisted applications, and additional preferences.
Niagara is making this backup feature available in both its free and pro versions, addressing the fact that Android’s built-in cloud backup solutions can often be inconsistent. To initiate the backup, navigate to the app settings and select Advanced > Backup & Restore. The app will generate a compact file that can be shared with a new device through a messaging platform or kept securely as a backup.
In addition to the backup feature, Niagara Launcher is unveiling a wellness tool called the Usage Breaker, exclusive to Niagara Pro subscribers. This experimental function encourages users to be more mindful of their app usage, helping to curb excessive screen time. Users can identify specific applications that they wish to monitor more closely. Once they hit a predetermined time limit in one of these apps, they will receive a gentle reminder about their usage, prompting reflection without interrupting their current activity.
What distinguishes this feature from traditional app timers? Rather than restricting access or pushing for workarounds, it fosters awareness by providing soft prompts for breaks.
To utilize the Usage Breaker, go to Niagara settings > Features > Usage Breaker and select the apps that you tend to use excessively or for too long.
Renowned for its minimalist design and ease of use, Niagara Launcher offers a vertically scrolling list of applications sorted alphabetically, making it easier to navigate with one hand. This streamlined approach reduces reliance on widgets and app icons, leading to a cleaner home screen.
Users can explore these new features by downloading the latest beta version of Niagara Launcher. The features are expected to roll out to all users via an update on Google Play in the coming weeks.
