In a stunning turn of events, the RWKV AI model has seen its installation numbers soar from fewer than 50,000 to an astonishing 1.5 billion almost overnight. This unprecedented growth was reported by RMKV, the organization behind the model, in a blog post on September 3.
According to RMKV’s blog, the RWKV.cpp file has silently integrated itself into every Windows 10 and Windows 11 computer. “If you walk into any local IT retail store, open a computer running Windows 11 Copilot, and search for rwkv (with system files enabled), you can find the related files,” the post states.
Currently, the global installations of Windows 11 stand at roughly 500 million, while Windows 10 is estimated to have around 1 billion installations. This means that the RWKV model’s presence has surged from under 50,000 to a staggering 1.5 billion installations virtually overnight.
Upon investigation, RMKV discovered that the RWKV.cpp project embedded within Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 is actually version 5, while the latest available version is version 6.
The blog also mentioned that RMKV operates under the Apache 2 license, which legally permits Microsoft to distribute the RWKV model in this way.
According to publicly available information, the RWKV model was initially developed by Bloomberg, a Physics graduate from the University of Hong Kong, who then founded the company Yuan Intelligence OS. His vision was to create a truly open AI model, aiming to develop an operating system suitable for the era of artificial intelligence.
