Leica Camera AG stands out as a prominent player in the global camera market. Recognizing that millions rely on smartphones as their primary photography tool, the company has introduced the innovative Leica LUX Grip designed specifically for the iPhone.
Retailing at $329, the LUX Grip attaches effortlessly to your iPhone using MagSafe technology, enhancing the device’s resemblance to a classic camera. It connects via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to the Leica LUX app, greatly expanding its capabilities.
The LUX Grip aims to recreate the sensory experience familiar with traditional Leica cameras. It features a two-stage shutter mechanism: a light touch focuses the shot, while pressing all the way captures the image. There’s also a dedicated button for quickly switching between different shooting modes.
Two customizable control elements on the grip can be programmed using the Leica LUX app. One button offers immediate access to frequently used features, while a tactile control dial allows for precise adjustments to crucial settings, including zoom, aperture, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. This thoughtful design ensures that photographers have the necessary tools for crafting the perfect shot, even while using a smartphone.
The LUX Grip charges via USB-C and is suitable for both left- and right-handed users. An integrated tripod mount at the base adds to its versatility.
Weighing in at 130 grams, the grip adds some heft to your iPhone, making it noticeable. For context, the standard iPhone 16 weighs 170 grams, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max comes in at 227 grams.

Even without the grip, users can enjoy the benefits of the LUX app. Though not new to the App Store, the app recently received several updates, including a 50mm lens simulator and options to add film grain effects to images. Many features within the LUX app are free, while a Pro version, which unlocks all capabilities, is available for $69.99 annually. LUX Grip users can access the Pro version free for one year.
The introduction of the LUX Grip comes just under two years after Leica’s acquisition of Fjorden, a Norwegian company known for its own camera grips. Elements from Fjorden’s designs have inspired several features found in the new LUX Grip.
The Leica LUX Grip is currently available at selected Leica Stores, in the Leica Online Store, and through specialized retailers.
