Josh Gad Talks About Spaceballs Sequel Script

Almost 40 years ago, Mel Brooks’ comedy Spaceballs premiered in cinemas, establishing itself as an iconic parody of the Star Wars franchise. Over the years, discussions regarding a sequel have circulated, but concrete plans only emerged recently when Josh Gad disclosed his involvement in a new Spaceballs film, working alongside Mel Brooks to write the script. Gad revealed that the first draft is complete, signaling a significant step forward for the anticipated sequel.

“As much as I’d love to discuss the project further without MGM bringing me into their Hollywood facilities, I can confirm that the draft is finished,” Gad mentioned in a conversation with Forbes. “Everyone who has seen it has been impressed. Collaborating with Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my professional journey.”

While Gad has not disclosed which character he might portray, speculation suggests he could play either Barf or his son. Despite being tight-lipped about specific plot elements, he expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating directly with Brooks on this project.

“It’s a dream to bring to life the vision that Yogurt foresaw in the original film,” said Gad. “I wish I could share more, but every minute I have right now is devoted to pushing this project closer to completion. I truly believe we are nearing the finish line.”

The original Spaceballs was released on June 24, 1987, which gives plenty of time to prepare for a potential sequel by the 40th anniversary in 2027, if not sooner. For now, the key question remains whether the project will progress through development stages successfully.
