Instagram is introducing a new set of features designed to simplify content sharing and enhance connection with friends, including a highly anticipated reposting tool, a real-time location map, and an updated Reels experience.
On August 6, Meta announced three key updates: the ability to repost posts directly into a dedicated section, an optional location sharing map, and a new “Friends” tab within Reels.
Meta explained, “People have always come to Instagram to share their activities and whereabouts. Now, with reposts, the new map, and the Friends tab in Reels, it’s easier to stay connected with friends through the content you enjoy.”
Reposting simplifies sharing on Instagram
The new repost feature enables users to share public posts and Reels from other accounts directly to their followers’ feeds. These reposts will appear in followers’ main feeds and have their own “Reposts” tab on user profiles. While credit is given to the original creator, Meta emphasizes this feature’s potential for content creators to expand their audience.
Location sharing via Instagram map
Launching in the US starting August 6, the Instagram Map allows users to share their recent location with selected contacts. Users can browse content by location, such as concert videos, restaurant posts, or travel highlights, and can disable location sharing anytime. Parents using Instagram’s supervision tools will get notifications if their teen starts sharing their location and can control who can see their child’s location.
Meta added, “You can choose whether your teen can share their location and see who has access to it.”
Introducing the ‘Friends’ tab on Reels
A new “Friends” tab will show users a feed of public content their friends have liked or commented on, along with personalized groups called “Blends.” Users can opt to hide their interactions and mute updates from specific individuals.
This update follows recent safety changes, such as tighter restrictions on direct messages for teens and content controls for accounts run by adults that feature minors. Additionally, Instagram rolled out a summer profile redesign in June, allowing users to rearrange their grid of photos and videos.
Overall, Instagram’s latest features focus on making sharing more interactive, location-aware, and tailored to individual preferences while maintaining a focus on safety and user control.
