Samsung is gearing up for the launch of its 2025 collection of foldable smartphones, anticipated to debut next summer. Exciting new details are currently surfacing. According to industry expert Ross Young from the display supply chain sector, there are noteworthy updates regarding these devices.
The latest information suggests that the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 will utilize the same display technology as the recently launched Galaxy Fold Special Edition, boasting an 8-inch foldable main screen and a 6.5-inch cover display. In comparison, the existing Galaxy Z Fold 6 features a 7.6-inch primary display and a 6.3-inch cover display. Young also forecasts that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 might offer a larger 6.85-inch foldable display alongside a 4-inch cover display, up from the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s 6.7-inch main display and 3.4-inch cover screen.
Moreover, recent insights from Digital Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) reveal a decline in the foldable smartphone market this year, despite the overall smartphone segment thriving. DSCC projects a modest 5% increase in foldable smartphone sales for 2024, followed by a potential 4% decrease in 2025. Since 2019, this market has experienced consistent annual growth of at least 40%.
Interestingly, panel shipments for the Galaxy Z Flip 6, launched earlier this year, are predicted to drop by at least 10% compared to those of the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
The Galaxy Z Flip remains the world’s best-selling foldable device.
On another note, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is expected to outperform the Galaxy Z Fold 5 in terms of shipments by a small margin. However, Samsung’s overall acquisition of foldable panels may decrease by over 20%, hitting the lowest figures seen since 2021, partially due to underwhelming performance of older models.
Transitioning to larger displays in upcoming foldable models is a positive advancement. Yet, this alone may not be sufficient to bolster sales numbers. The high price tag of foldable smartphones compared to conventional models likely contributes significantly to the stagnation in this market segment. Acknowledging this challenge, Samsung is reportedly working on more budget-friendly versions of its foldable devices.
Expect the unveiling of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 next summer. These new smartphones are likely to feature upgraded displays, improved camera systems, different processors, and refined aesthetics. Additionally, Samsung’s first trifold smartphone could debut next year, along with a more affordable Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE.
