Den of Wolves, the upcoming title from 10 Chambers, known for their work on GTFO, unveiled a new trailer during The Game Awards 2024. This latest footage further explores the game’s cyberpunk, anti-capitalist narrative which notably revolves around the assassination of corporate leaders.
Initial glimpses of the game were showcased at the previous Game Awards in a cryptic trailer, and this year, 10 Chambers provided more insights into the storyline, gameplay mechanics, and structure during a press briefing attended by Digital Trends.
The newly released trailer highlights the game’s fast-paced first-person shooting but doesn’t delve deeply into specifics. A key takeaway is that Den of Wolves is designed as a four-player cooperative heist experience, reminiscent of the Payday series, with which studio CEO Ulf Andersson has previous involvement. Set in a dystopian environment, the game’s lore tackles issues like governmental instability triggered by hackers employing AI for large-scale identity theft and economic collapse. In the wake of chaos, major corporations offer to fix the situation, demanding unchecked authority in return.
This escalating scenario results in the creation of Midway City, where corporations gain immense power. Following typical cyberpunk themes, this leads to unsympathetic outcomes. By the year 2097, companies start recruiting mercenaries to handle their morally questionable tasks—including stealing prototypes and targeting rival executives.
The narrative’s provocative angles are particularly timely, coinciding with a recent real-world assassination of United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson. This incident has spurred extensive debates online regarding the motives behind the act, the challenges within the American healthcare system, and the ethical implications of political violence. Den of Wolves aligns with these discussions, as Andersson describes it as a game centered on surviving the trials of late-stage capitalism by any means necessary.
While the latest trailer emphasizes the storyline, 10 Chambers also disclosed several new gameplay details during the press preview. The game will feature a four-player heist format, allowing players to approach missions through a blend of stealth and action. Players will navigate a world segmented into various districts, with mission durations ranging from 20 minutes to two hours.
The team plans to release Den of Wolves as an early-access title, although they have yet to announce a specific launch date. The initial release will grant players access to the Promised District, the game’s first area.
Den of Wolves is currently under development for PC.
