After stepping down from his iconic role as Captain America in Avengers: Endgame, Chris Evans seemed to leave the Marvel realm behind. Transitioning away from the superhero genre, he took on roles in films like Ghosted and Red One.
However, following a surprise appearance in last summer’s Deadpool & Wolverine, Evans is confirmed to return in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The big question now is: which character will he portray? The answer may not be as straightforward as it seems.
Chris Evans could play Cap … or another notable superhero
As reported by Deadline, Evans has officially joined the cast of the next Avengers installment, which will also include Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Doctor Doom. However, specifics regarding the nature of Evans' role in Doomsday remain unclear, including whether he will return as Steve Rogers.
Given the ongoing Multiverse Saga in the MCU, it's entirely possible for Evans to appear as an alternate version of Captain America or even as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, as he did in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Can there be two Captain Americas in the MCU?
Currently, the spotlight in the Captain America franchise is on Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, who will be taking center stage in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World. Nevertheless, the comics do show a precedent for both Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson operating as Captain America simultaneously, particularly if the events in Doomsday allow for Rogers’ youth to be restored.
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo, famed for their work on Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, are set to return to the MCU to direct both Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Besides Evans and Downey, the rest of the main cast has yet to be confirmed. Reports suggest that Marvel’s new Fantastic Four members—Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Vanessa Kirby, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach—will feature in Doomsday, though no official announcements have been made regarding their next appearance following The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release in theaters on May 1, 2026.
