DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, has announced that it will maintain a permanent 75% discount on its flagship V4-Pro AI model, effectively reducing the price to just 25% of its original cost. This decision was shared in a company statement on Saturday. The firm did not specify whether the price reduction was influenced by an uptick in Huawei’s Ascend 950 chip supply, which they utilize to optimize V4’s performance.
The company has lowered API fees for V4-Pro to a range between 0.025 and 6 yuan per million tokens—roughly $0.0035 to $0.83—depending on the usage scenario, down from previous rates of 0.1 to 24 yuan. A “token” refers to a segment of text processed by the AI.
Huawei’s AI chip sales have seen a boost due to US export restrictions that prevent Nvidia from selling its most advanced chips in China. However, export restrictions on semiconductor manufacturing equipment have hindered Huawei’s ability to ramp up production of Ascend chips.
When DeepSeek launched V4 last month, they noted that the Pro version would be priced up to twelve times higher than their less powerful Flash version due to limitations in high-end computing resources, which restricted availability. They also indicated that Pro pricing would likely decline significantly once Huawei’s Ascend 950 supernodes are mass-produced in the latter half of the year.
