The first-ever World Humanoid Robot Games, dubbed the “Humanoid Robot Olympics,” is currently taking place in Beijing. The competition features androids competing across 26 events designed to evaluate their athletic, performative, practical, and human-interaction skills.
Over 500 humanoid robots representing 280 teams from 16 countries are participating in the event, held at the National Speed Skating Oval, a venue that hosted the Winter Olympics in 2022. The opening ceremony took place yesterday, and the competition will run until August 17.
Major Chinese robotics companies such as Unitree Robotics, Songyan Power Beijing Technology, Accelerated Evolution, Fourier, and Zhuoyide are involved, with the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center competing in the most categories—16 in total. Renowned academic institutions like Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University are also taking part.
International teams from the United States, Germany, Australia, Japan, and 11 other countries have joined the competition.
The robots will compete in four primary categories: traditional sports (competitive), real-world applications (scenario), dance and martial arts (performance), and exploration of human-robot interaction and technology boundaries (exhibition). Each of these categories includes several sub-events.
Scores will be compiled based on their performances across multiple contests, which will determine the overall rankings and award the gold medals.
