Argentine soccer star Lucas Trejo’s wife and two children have tragically lost their lives following a powerful twin earthquake in Venezuela, according to his team. Trejo, who is with Club Sport Maritimo La Guaira— a second-tier Venezuelan club—spent three days frantically searching the rubble for his wife, Yanina, and their children, Aaron and Ainhoa, before rescue teams finally retrieved their remains, reports U.S. media.
The club expressed their sorrow on Instagram, sharing a heartfelt post alongside a family photo, mourning the devastating loss. Trejo, 38, was in Caracas at a team training camp when two earthquakes, magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck Wednesday evening, reports CNN.
Following the tremors, Trejo rushed back to his home in La Guaira, the hardest-hit region, and arrived to scene of devastation described as “horrific” by his brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles. Ardiles recounted, “He found nothing but ruins where his home once stood.”
Venezuelan authorities announced that nearly 1,500 people have perished, with tens of thousands still missing or unaccounted for as of Sunday.
