Android 16 Codename Leaked And It’s Not What We Expected
As we anticipate the full release of Android 15, information has surfaced indicating a potential codename for Android 16. Traditionally, each version of Android has had an appetizing internal codename—Android 15 is known as Vanilla Ice Cream, while Android 14 goes by Upside Down Cake. Android 16, however, has deviated from this pattern by adopting a name with a richer flavor: Baklava.

Mishall Rahman from Android Authority has reported that a developer named teamb58 delved into Google’s AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and discovered this name hidden within the codebase. It might sound whimsical to speculate on operating system updates based on dessert names, but Android tends to alter its naming convention when significant changes occur. Transitioning from cake-themed names to pastries suggests that Android 16 will have some notable differences beyond just its label.

It’s worth noting that these naming conventions are systematic; each new Android version starts with the next letter in the alphabet. With Vanilla Ice Cream currently in circulation, the subsequent name should ideally begin with the letter Z. The shift back to B indicates that a major transformation is underway.

Additionally, several unnamed developers at Google have hinted at a launch date in the second quarter of 2025. Typically, Android releases its OS updates during the latter half of the year, but delays surrounding Android 15 may alter this timeline. Thus, Android 16 could be on track for an earlier launch, or it may follow a different schedule due to the prolonged rollout of its predecessor.

The discovery of this codename has sparked interesting discussions among experts regarding the implications of such a name change for future Android development. Although various theories abound, no definitive information has been confirmed. It’s exciting and encouraging to know that advancements in Android are still progressing, even with the delays surrounding Android 15.
