Director Paul Feig Confirms Release for A Simple Favor 2
Director Paul Feig is confident that audiences will have the opportunity to see A Simple Favor 2, the sequel to his 2018 film starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, later this year. Speculation regarding the movie’s future arose when a user named Eric B. shared a Twitter thread alleging tension between Kendrick and Lively, as well as Lively’s purported reluctance to promote the film due to her ongoing legal issues related to her collaboration with It Ends With Us director Justin Baldoni, which supposedly led Amazon to place the sequel on indefinite hold.
Responding to these claims on his X account, Feig stated, “This is total BS. Sorry. The movie is finished and coming out soon. Don’t believe anything you read on social media these days.” When the thread’s author challenged Feig by questioning why Amazon has not announced a release date or promotional plans for a film that completed filming in April 2024, Feig explained, “My friend, it’s called post-production, which generally takes over half a year at least.”
“Our post schedule always had us finishing everything by mid-January,” he elaborated. “Movies don’t come out the second they’re finished because studios spend considerable time determining the best release date. We’ve always aimed for something in the spring or summer of this year. That’s how movies typically operate. I hope this clarifies things.”
The original A Simple Favor received favorable reviews upon its release in September 2018, earning nearly $100 million worldwide against a reported budget of $20 million. Despite its success, a sequel was only confirmed in early 2022. If A Simple Favor 2 is indeed released as Feig indicates, nearly seven years will have passed between the two films. Feig returns to direct the sequel, co-written by Laeta Kalogridis and Jessica Sharzer, who also penned the original.
Kendrick, Lively, and fellow cast members Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin, Joshua Satine, and Ian Ho will reprise their roles in the sequel. The plot details remain under wraps, leaving fans to speculate whether it will be as twist-filled as its predecessor. Nevertheless, Feig reassures fans that they should not be concerned about the sequel’s progress.
In addition to dispelling the rumors, Feig took the opportunity to provide some enticing details about A Simple Favor 2, stating that it is “coming soon” and expressing his excitement about the film: “The movie is awesome, and Blake and Anna turn in amazing performances. I can’t wait for you all to see it.”
You can currently stream A Simple Favor on Netflix, while the sequel does not yet have a confirmed release date.
