Throughout history, several ancient currencies have endured the test of time, remaining in circulation in various forms. Their longevity offers a glimpse into the economic past and highlights how deeply some monetary systems are embedded in a nation’s identity. Here are some of the oldest currencies still in use today in 2025.

1. The British Pound Sterling: An Ancient Financial Legacy

The British pound sterling (GBP) is arguably the oldest currency still in widespread use. Tracing its origins back to the Anglo-Saxon period, the pound was initially a unit of weight for silver. It was standardized in the 8th century and officially adopted as currency during the reign of King Offa of Mercia in the late 8th century. Today, the pound remains one of the world’s strongest currencies, serving as the cornerstone of the UK’s economy for over 1,200 years.

2. The Chinese Yuan Renminbi: A Modern Continuation of Ancient Chinese Money

China’s currency, the Renminbi (RMB), with its unit called the yuan, has roots stretching back to ancient Chinese coinage. The earliest forms were spade and knife money used during the Zhou Dynasty over 2,000 years ago. Today, the modern yuan, established in 1949 along with the People’s Republic of China, is a direct descendant of this long history. It remains a major global currency, symbolizing China’s economic growth over the centuries.

3. The Japanese Yen: Emerging from the Feudal Era

The yen (JPY) was introduced officially in 1871, following the Meiji Restoration, replacing the Edo period’s complex monetary system. However, its conceptual roots trace back much further, with currency-like craft and coinage used in ancient Japan during the 8th century. The yen’s adoption marked a move towards modernization, but the currency’s design and some denomination concepts reflect centuries of Japanese monetary history.

4. The Indian Rupee: An Ancient Currency with a Rich History

India’s rupee (INR) is one of the oldest currencies still in use today. Its history dates back over 4,000 years, with early forms of standardized coinage used during the Mahajanapada period around 6th Century BCE. The modern rupee was adopted as a unified currency in the early 19th century under British rule, inspired by Indian and international monetary traditions. Today, the Indian rupee symbolizes a thriving economy and a continuity of ancient trade practices.

5. The Swiss Franc: A Currency Rooted in Historical Financial Stability

Although officially introduced as a national currency in 1850, the Swiss franc (CHF) draws upon centuries-old banking and monetary practices from Swiss cities such as Zurich and Geneva. The region’s long-standing reputation for stability and financial prudence has helped the franc remain a trusted currency through turbulent times, including both World Wars and economic crises.

6. The Egyptian Pound: From Ancient Roots to Modern Economy

Egypt’s currency, the Egyptian pound (EGP), officially appeared in its current form in 1958 but has origins dating back to the 19th century. Its roots are intertwined with ancient Egyptian trade and currency practices, including barter and early standardized coinage. Today, the pound remains vital in the Middle East and North Africa, representing a legacy of economic resilience.

7. The Portuguese Escudo (Historical Mention, Pre-2002) and Its Legacy

While the Portuguese escudo was replaced by the euro in 2002, its history traces back to medieval times, creating a longstanding monetary tradition. Its coins and notes carried centuries of Portuguese economic history. Today, the euro acts as Portugal’s currency, but the escudo remains a symbol of national heritage.

This list highlights how some of the world’s oldest currencies have successfully adapted and persisted through centuries of change, wars, and economic shifts. Their continued circulation not only reflects stability but also embodies the deep-rooted history of their respective nations.
