One of the first lessons most players learn in Magic: The Gathering is that you start with 20 life points, and if you drop to zero or lower, you lose the game. While gaining life may not secure a victory right away, it can help you survive long enough to turn the tables. Lifelink is one of the most effective methods to do just that.
On the surface, lifelink appears straightforward, but it can create some confusing situations that stump players. In this article, we’ll clarify how lifelink functions and address some common queries about this well-known ability.
How Does Lifelink Work?
Lifelink is an ability that some creatures possess; whenever a lifelink creature inflicts damage, its controller gains that amount of life. For instance, if you attack or block with a 3/3 creature with lifelink, and it deals 3 damage, you gain 3 life.
Here are a few key points about lifelink:
- Creatures inflict their full damage, even if it surpasses the toughness of the creature they are fighting. For example, if your 3/3 creature is blocked by a 2/2, you still gain 3 life because your creature dealt 3 damage.
- Lifelink applies to non-combat damage as well. If your lifelink creature deals damage due to an effect from another card, you will gain life from that damage.
- Lifelink allows you to gain life no matter who or what the creature deals damage to; whether it’s a player, another creature, or a planeswalker, you’ll gain life all the same.
Noncreature Spells with Lifelink
Though rare, there are instances where noncreature spells can have lifelink. For example, the card Heartflame Duelist grants lifelink to your instants and sorceries. In these situations, if a spell deals damage, you gain that much life. If it doesn’t deal damage, then lifelink doesn’t apply.
FAQs About Lifelink
Lifelink can be puzzling for newcomers, so here are answers to some frequently asked questions regarding this ability.
Do Blockers with Lifelink Allow You to Gain Life?
Yes! Blocking creatures inflict damage, and if they possess lifelink, their controller gains life equal to the damage dealt.
If an Opponent Takes Control of My Lifelink Creature, Who Gains the Life?
Lifelink rules specify that the creature’s controller gains life based on the damage dealt, not the owner. If an opponent gains control of your lifelink creature and it deals damage, they will gain the life, not you.
What Happens If Lifelink Damage Is Prevented?
If a lifelink creature is prevented from dealing damage—perhaps its target is removed before damage is applied—then its controller won’t gain any life. Since dealing damage is required to gain life from lifelink, if no damage occurs, neither does the life gain.
What if a Creature Has Both Lifelink and Deathtouch?
A creature with deathtouch will still deal damage equal to its power in combat, allowing its controller to gain life accordingly. Deathtouch simply means that any creature damaged by it will die, regardless of its toughness.
