In the expansive world of Caves Of Qud, there are many hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. However, it’s often more effective to simply purchase the items you need from a village or a traveling trader. Selling your found items to make room in your inventory and to acquire better equipment is a key aspect of any RPG experience.
The most specialized merchants typically have the greatest variety of goods, yet you can trade with almost any NPC who has items you seek. Here’s a guide to navigating the buying and selling system in Qud’s unique water-based economy.
How to Trade with an NPC
Generally, if you can engage in conversation with an NPC, trading is an option too. Provided they are friendly and have goods available, they should be open to considering your offers.
Remember, neither you nor the NPC can trade items that are currently equipped.
During most NPC interactions, there will be an option to “Let’s Trade,” which will open the trading interface. However, you can also jump straight to trading by pressing the Tab key while talking to that NPC. If trading is not an option, it will notify you with a message.
Buying and Selling
When you’re on the trade screen, your inventory appears on the right, while the vendor’s inventory is on the left. You can select items from either side to propose what you want to give or receive. Feel free to negotiate until you’re satisfied; the trade only becomes official once you click “Trade” at the bottom or press the O key (for “offer”).
Traders will always accept your offer, but they may provide you with better rates depending on your Ego Attribute and how well they perceive you.
To add or remove all items from a stack, click on it. For partial amounts, use the arrow keys to highlight the item and the + or – keys to adjust the quantity.
Each item has a dollar sign indicating its worth in drams of fresh water. At the time of completing the trade, the side with the lower valued items must pay the difference, rounded to the nearest dram. Vendors will always have enough water for this transaction, but if you lack the funds, the trade cannot proceed.
Since water can become heavy when carried in large quantities, consider purchasing lighter trade items like copper nuggets, which take up less space while maintaining their value.
Trader Services
You can also request services from traders by highlighting an item and pressing the corresponding hotkey as follows:
Service |
Hotkey |
---|---|
Repair a cracked or broken item. |
R |
Recharge a depleted energy cell. |
C |
Identify an item. |
I |
All of these services cost water for each item, so if you have the skills to do it yourself, it’s often more efficient to handle it on your own.
