“A Relic Reborn: The Chimera” is a level 50 Trial in Final Fantasy 14 that challenges a group of eight players to face the Dhorme Chimera. This Trial is an essential step in creating your Zodiac Relic Weapon, requiring you to defeat the Chimera and collect its Alumina Salts.
The Dhorme Chimera shares many similarities in mechanics and appearance with the Chimera boss found at the end of Cutter’s Cry. If you’re familiar with that encounter, this one should feel manageable. Below, you’ll find all the key information about the Chimera Trial.
This fight is considered outdated content, and many of the mechanics listed below may not appear in a typical run. If your only goal is completing this Trial for the Zodiac Weapon, you can easily do it unsynced at level 70 or above.
How To Unlock A Relic Reborn: The Chimera
To unlock “A Relic Reborn: The Chimera,” you must complete the Zodiac Weapon quest, which begins with ‘The Weaponsmith of Legend.’ This quest becomes available after finishing the level 50 MSQ ‘The Ultimate Weapon.’ You initiate ‘The Weaponsmith of Legend’ by speaking with Nedrick Ironheart in Western Thanalan (X:12.0, Y:14.3).
Upon completing ‘The Weaponsmith of Legend,’ you can continue the questline by talking to Gerolt in North Shroud (X:30.2, Y:20.2) to start ‘A Relic Reborn’ for the Zodiac Weapon you’ve chosen. After locating the Timeworn Weapon and adding the required Materia, you will have access to the A Relic Reborn: The Chimera Trial.

Deals damage in a circle around a chosen player and leaves a pool of ice that inflicts Frostbite. The Tank should pull the boss away from these ice puddles for easier navigation around the encounter. |
Ice Charge |
Buff |
The Chimera gains a buff to its Ice-related attacks—The Ram’s Breath and The Ram’s Voice. The Ram’s Breath will cast instantly, and The Ram’s Voice will not only deal more damage but also cover the entire arena. Following this attack, the Chimera will switch to Lighting Charge. When Ice Charge is active, remain on the left side of the boss to avoid its instant-cast The Ram’s Breath. |
Lightning Charge |
Buff |
The Chimera becomes enhanced in its Lightning-related attacks—The Dragon’s Breath and The Dragon’s Voice. The Dragon’s Breath becomes an instant-cast, and The Dragon’s Voice will deal increased damage. After casting The Dragon’s Voice, the Chimera regains Ice Charge. During Lightning Charge, stay on the right side of the boss to sidestep the instant-cast Dragon’s Breath. |
Overall, this encounter resembles the previous Chimera fight in Cutter’s Cry, except with additional status effects and the mechanics of Ice and Lightning Charges. Even with a random group, you should be able to learn and overcome this Trial without much difficulty.
