Sony quietly released a new PS5 theme with a recent system update, but it’s arguably not its most creative effort. The Welcome Hub now features a static background inspired by the upcoming Bungie game Marathon, and it lacks any real excitement or flair.
The theme is simply the Marathon artwork displayed in a static image. It’s only the second non-animated, game-based background officially offered by Sony, with the other being a static theme based on MLB: The Show.
This addition feels somewhat pointless since players can easily create their own themes, especially once Marathon launches in March and more assets become available. Official backgrounds usually stand out because of their animations and distinctive PlayStation-themed visuals, which are missing here.
While it’s not a huge issue, adding even a simple animation would have improved the overall presentation.
Additionally, both the PS5 and PS4 received system firmware updates today. If you don’t see the new theme or the update yet, don’t worry—Sony has announced that both will be gradually rolled out in phases.
