PS5 users received a welcome surprise today with a free upgrade offer. One of the most acclaimed titles from the previous console generation is now available for free upgrade for those who already own it.
In an unexpected move, Rockstar announced that any owner of Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One—whether physical or digital—can upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version at no cost starting tomorrow. This upgrade allows players to enjoy the game on the latest hardware and dive into the new version of GTA Online, which is also receiving a significant update.
For those who haven’t upgraded yet, Rockstar enables players to transfer all their data, including story mode and online progress, to the new consoles. Fans eager to upgrade should watch for the enhanced version of the game on the PlayStation Store or Xbox Marketplace.
Originally launched in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V is Rockstar’s seventh main entry in the series and the most recent installment so far. It was set in the fictional state of San Andreas and featured three interconnected protagonists. Much like other Rockstar titles, GTA V received widespread praise and is the second-best-selling game of all time. The game maintains a strong player base through GTA Online, which continues to be popular.
A sixth Grand Theft Auto game has been in the works for some time and is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
