Avacyn, Angel of Hope is a mono-white commander in Magic: The Gathering. While being limited to white and colorless cards might seem like a drawback, most of the cards you include in your deck will predominantly be white anyway.
Avacyn, Angel of Hope offers an interesting twist on the Angel theme. Although it may not be the strongest Angel commander, it provides diverse strategies for achieving victory beyond merely casting a lot of Angel spells. Avacyn incorporates a subtle Stax strategy to slow down your opponents while primarily focusing on a traditional Angel and lifegain approach. If you’re looking for a fresh interpretation of Angels, Avacyn, Angel of Hope is an excellent choice.

This deck consists of 30 creatures, 12 sorceries, 4 instants, 15 artifacts, 5 enchantments, and 33 lands (including one land with the backside of a spell). The focus is heavily on creatures, while the other cards mainly serve to eliminate your opponents’ permanents.
Key Cards
Avacyn, Angel of Hope
As the commander of the deck, Avacyn, Angel of Hope is a powerful creature that makes all your permanents indestructible. It has indestructible itself, meaning that once it’s on the field, your opponents can only get rid of your permanents through exile.
Avacyn synergizes extremely well with board wipes, which become one-sided since your permanents will remain unaffected. Casting Avacyn does require a substantial amount of mana, so gathering enough resources to play her may take some time, but once she’s on the battlefield, she becomes a formidable obstacle for your opponents.
Giada, Font of Hope
Since most of the creatures in your deck are Angels, Giada, Font of Hope serves as a fantastic mana dork for Angels and can also boost them with +1/+1 counters. Giada is a low-cost creature, allowing you to exploit its beneficial effect early in the game.
Giada, Font of Hope continuously grants +1/+1 counters based on the number of Angels you control. Since Giada counts itself, if she is the only Angel in play, the next Angel you summon will still receive a +1/+1 counter.
The deck heavily focuses on combat, and the +1/+1 counters for the Angels can help reduce your opponents’ life totals quickly. Note that white mana can only be spent on Angel spells, limiting its usage for other purposes.
Worldslayer
Worldslayer is typically a card that players avoid because it destroys all permanents except itself. However, when you have Avacyn, Angel of Hope on the battlefield, it becomes a powerful tool to eliminate only your opponents’ permanents.
This card notably also destroys lands. If you manage to attack successfully while equipped with Worldslayer, you are highly likely to claim victory, as all your opponents will lose control of whatever they had on the battlefield.
Smothering Tithe
Mono-white decks often struggle with resources, and Smothering Tithe helps mitigate this issue. It triggers whenever any card is drawn, including your draw for the turn. Paying two mana can often seem steep, making it likely you will collect Treasure tokens from this card.
Having Smothering Tithe on the battlefield early is vital for your strategy since Avacyn plays a significant role in your game plan; you will want to cast her as soon as possible. With a high mana curve, the extra mana from the Treasures is crucial for consistently casting your spells.
Pearl Medallion
Pearl Medallion is an essential card for mono-white decks and is particularly important in an Avacyn setup. With a high mana curve, even a one-mana discount becomes incredibly valuable for rapidly casting your most powerful spells.
Nearly every card in your deck will benefit from Pearl Medallion because you’re only using white cards. Out of the total 52 white cards, only 15 are colorless and thus unaffected.
How to Play the Deck
An Avacyn, Angel of Hope deck is focused on pouring Angels onto the battlefield while dismantling your opponents’ board presence. Your priority should be to constantly bring Angels onto the field to establish defenses and gradually decrease their life totals.
Once Avacyn is on the battlefield, you can unleash your board wipes to eliminate threats. Cards like Planar Cleansing, Ondu Inversion, and Devastating Mastery can wipe out all nonland permanents, while Armageddon and Ravages of War will destroy all lands.
Be cautious with land destruction; only deploy them once Avacyn is securely on the battlefield. You can utilize your board wipes beforehand if an opponent poses a significant threat.
This deck has a relatively high mana curve, featuring many costly spells. Pearl Medallion helps lower casting costs on white spells, while Starnheim Aspirant reduces Angel spell costs by two. Additionally, Oketra’s Monument decreases white creature spell costs by one while generating a 1/1 token with every creature spell cast.
There’s a secondary lifegain theme in the deck, with cards like Soul Warden and Guide of Souls generating life with each creature that enters. Many Angels have natural lifegain abilities, contributing to key stat boosts from cards like Righteous Valkyrie.
The main win condition of the deck is combat damage. You’ll gather a large number of creatures, most with flying, to make dealing damage easier. If your opponents have creatures with reach or flying, make sure to use your board wipes to clear those blockers.
Alternatively, you can achieve victory via Felidar Sovereign or Angel of Destiny, winning the game when you hit a specific life total—something that’s easy to accomplish thanks to the lifegain theme. This provides a useful backup plan if you can’t establish your Avacyn engine quickly.
The primary weakness of the deck is its slower nature. Mono-white generally has difficulty generating mana, meaning it can take longer to set everything up. The high mana curve presents challenges, but Pearl Medallion and Smothering Tithe help to ramp up your mana. Additionally, cards like The Book of Exalted Deeds and Platinum Angel slow down the game by preventing losses for you and wins for your opponents.
